TAMATEA POKAIWHENUA - THE STORY
Tamatea Arikinui was a navigator of considerable mana. His knowledge of the blue ocean was outstanding as he sailed from Rarotonga to New Zealand.
Tamatea later acquired the name Tamatea Pokaiwhenua because of his passion for plants and agriculture. A love story is told about his love for a young woman. On a hill named Te Taumatawhakatangihangakoauaupukepikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu
Its the longest name in the world with 85 letters. It means, "Tamatea played his flute to lure his young lover to climb the mountain without slipping as he waited and prepared a meal for them to share and make love"

Your kaiarahi (guide) brings the mountain to life with stories, passed down through generations. At the mountain summit, experience breathtaking views where a thriving pā (Māori strategic stronghold) once stood.
The tour continues with a Marae visit and stories abound. The ultimate Maori cultural experience includes the native bush walk (with a surprise), a powhiri (Maori welcome ceremony). Traditional Maori food (Hangi) can also be arranged.
